North Charleston
North Charleston is the third largest city in the state of South Carolina. It has approximately 27 neighborhoods and extends into three counties, Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester. The city is located near the Atlantic Ocean on the coastal plain of North of the city of Charleston. It is a principal city in the Charleston-North Charleston urbanized area and the city leads the state in top gross retail sales. The city motto is “A great place to live, work and play” and “Perseverance, Progress, Prosperity.” The city has a mayor/council form of municipal government featuring a mayor and a council of ten members. North Charleston is an extremely diverse city in terms of race, ethnicity, age, religion and any other label you would like to explore. Common ancestries among residents include Irish, English, Italian and French. English is the primary written and spoken language in the city, followed by Spanish and Vietnamese.
Before the Civil War, the area was dotted with plantations, many or which raised crops of rice and indigo. Among the many plantations were Archdale Hall Plantation built in 1680. Elms Plantation built in 1682, Windsor Hill Plantation built in 1701 and more. By the end of the 1800s, the large plantations were divided into many smaller farms. The area developed very slowly and remained mostly rural, housing phosphate fertilizer plants and strip mines for much of its history. It was not until 1972 that the slow growing community was officially incorporated.
The city spans 76.6 square miles, 73.2 of land and 3.5 of water. It has a mixed workforce, where neither white nor blue collar work is predominant. It is a middle-income community according to state standards and lower middle-income compared to national economic standards. In 2016, the population was between 109,298 and 112,147, the estimated median household income was $35,600 and the estimated per capita income was $21,073. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value in the community was $152,000, the mean price on all housing units was $174,538 and the median gross rent was $895. The current approximate median home price is $168,000. Public transportation is a popular option for daily commutes.
