West Ashley
West Ashley is one of Charleston’s first suburbs, which today is one of six areas/districts of the city. It was first known as West of Ashley and its name was and is derived from its location in relation to the Ashley River. The area is flanked by the marshlands of the Ashley River and the Stono Rivers which provide gorgeous peaceful views and homes for countless types of wildlife. There are approximately 100 neighborhoods in the area known as West Ashley. It is perfect for people of all ages from singles and couples to growing families and retirees. It is known for its sprawling yards, elegant homes, and Spanish moss draped green spaces. The parts of the neighborhood closer to Downtown Charleston contain older homes built in the 1940s and 50s and earlier. Many homes in the district are in beautiful waterfront communities featuring homes along tidal creeks, lakefront areas and deep-water areas. The neighborhood features wonderful eateries, unique shops and salons, as well as bars and coffee shops.
Before the arrival of English settlers, the area was inhabited by native tribes like the Kiawah Indians. West Ashley is considered the birthplace of the city of Charleston. The colonists from the English ship the Carolina established a permanent settlement in the area in about 1670. Development began in earnest in the 1950s and continues even now. The largest period of growth was in a twenty-year span from approximately 1970 through 1990. There are several sites in the area that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, Ashley Hall Plantation and others. By 2016, the estimated population of the district was 75,144 and the current approximate median home price is $255,000.
Public education for students from the area is provided by the schools of the Charleston County School District. The community is served by a dozen public schools, seven elementary schools, four middle schools and one high school, West Ashley High School. It is also home to several wonderful private schools. It is home to the lovely West Ashley Greenway, a 10-mile protected trail perfect for walking, jogging or biking. From sprawling historic homes to newly constructed homes on small lots the West Ashley area has it all. Homes for sale come in a variety of sizes, styles and prices to suit the needs of potential homebuyers. Other housing options include rental properties like apartments and leasable properties such as condominiums and townhomes.
