The Town of Mount Pleasant is seeing the commencement of initial projects linked to the Highway 41 Corridor expansion, aiming to tackle congestion until the final project is completed. Construction at the intersection of S.C. Highway 41 and U.S. Highway 17 began on May 13. Awarded to Truluck Construction, the $1.2 million bid covers sections of S.C. 41, U.S. 17, Joe Rouse Road, and Dingle Road. James Aton, Mount Pleasant's Deputy Director of Transportation, expressed optimism about the improvements, which include left turn lanes and a widened slip lane for smoother traffic flow onto Highway 17. Construction, expected to last three months, will involve temporary lane closures and detours.
Following this phase, the project will progress to the installation of turn lanes and a traffic signal at Joe Rouse Road and S.C. 41, as well as widening Dingle Road at U.S. 17. These interim measures, scheduled for completion by November, are designed to mitigate congestion until the more significant Highway 41 Corridor widening project begins in 2026. In the permitting phase, the county is collaborating with regulatory bodies to secure necessary approvals before proceeding with right-of-way acquisition in 2025. These interim improvements are crucial for immediate congestion relief, complementing the larger-scale project planned for the near future.
